General Characteristics of Transmission Gears

The tooth surface exhibits high hardness, with a Rockwell C hardness of 48–55, resulting in high contact strength and excellent wear resistance. The core retains the toughness achieved through quenching and tempering, providing good impact resistance and high load-carrying capacity. Gear accuracy can be improved by half, reaching Grade 7, making it suitable for mass production applications such as medium-speed, medium-load gearboxes in automobiles and machine tools. When low-carbon steel is used, the manufacturing process typically includes forging the blank, normalizing, rough cutting, quenching and tempering, finish cutting, carburizing and quenching, low-temperature tempering, and gear grinding.
Grades 6 and 7 are commonly used materials: 20Cr, 20CrMnTi, 20MnB, and 20CrMnTo.
