Powder metallurgy has received particular attention in the automotive industry.

Powder metallurgy (PM) is a manufacturing process in which metal powders, or mixtures of metal and nonmetal powders, are compacted into desired shapes within a die cavity and then sintered and finished to produce powdered-metal mechanical components. It is a material- and energy-saving, low-investment, fast-responding, pollution-free, large-scale-production–friendly, chip-free, and highly efficient metal-forming technology that has been widely adopted in industries such as automotive, motorcycle, and agricultural machinery manufacturing, with particular emphasis in the automotive sector. In recent years, the use of PM processes to manufacture components for automotive powertrains has continued to grow, driven by the numerous significant and unique advantages of PM-made parts: reduced costs, enhanced performance, lighter weight, and environmental benefits. Powder metallurgy can produce materials and components with specific properties that cannot be obtained through conventional melting methods; moreover, the residual porosity inherent in PM parts imparts self-lubricating and sound-damping characteristics. Although one of the original goals of the PM industry was to eliminate all machining operations, this objective has yet to be fully realized—most PM parts are produced in a “near-net-shape” condition and still require finishing to achieve the required dimensional accuracy and surface finish. However, because the microstructure of PM materials differs from that of castings and forgings, their machinability also exhibits distinctive characteristics.
