Gear meshing must comply with the fundamental law of tooth-profile contact, which states that, during the engagement of a pair of gears, the instantaneous transmission ratio is equal to the inverse ratio of the two segments into which the common normal at the point of contact divides the line joining the centers of the two gears. If the common normals at all points of tooth-profile contact intersect the line joining the centers at a fixed point, this constitutes the fundamental law of constant transmission ratio for tooth-profile contact; a pair of tooth profiles that satisfies this law is referred to as conjugate tooth profiles.
